. In 1808 Henry T. Mize moved from Homer,
a settlement then in Franklin County, now in Banks County, and bought five square
miles of land froma half Indian named Payne. It became the township of Flintsville
in1840. Around 1891, the name of the town was changed from Flintsvilleto Mize.
This was done to honor its' founder, Henry T. Mize. From "Mize Genealogy In
America," by Joel Sanford Mize, ClaudiaChitwood Weller, and Jessie Julia Mize:
"The 1790 U. S. Census lists Henry Mize, John Mize and Zachariah Mizein St.
Mary's District, Orange County, as taxpayers (North CarolinaState Rec. Vol.
26, p. 129). Henry Mize, the ancestor of many Georgia citizens, appears in the
1800 U. S. Census of South Carolina, UnionDistrict, enumerated in December 1800."
