William Pettigrew
James Pettigrew III Robert Pettigrew Charles Pettigrew John Pettigrew Samuel Pettigrew Son- died young 2 daughters |
Ancestral home of the Pettigrews in Northern Ireland. |
James Pettigrew II married Martha Moore, who was from Drummond, County Tyrone (she was NOT the "wealthy Scottish lady" - that was Dame Geiles Moncrieff); this James served in the Battle of the Boyne in 1690 and was given lands in Ireland for his service as well as being knighted. It does not appear that their home, "Crilly House", was a part of the original land grant. |
"As you wish
to know something of the origin of your family I will give you as good
an account as I can.
My great-grandfather
left France for the sake of his religion in the time of King Louis XIV,
and was an officer in
Cromwell's Army. He had two sons, John and
James. As to John, we have very little account given of him.
James married Martha
Moore, a Scotch lady. He settled in Ireland, and was an officer in King
William's army at
the Battle of the Boyne (1690). After the
Peace took place he was given a tract of land of 300 acres in County
Tyrone on what was called the Blackwater where
he lived and died ...... 7 sons and 2 daughters.
William, James (my
father), Robert, Charles, John, Samuel. One died young. William was the
eldest. He had three
sons. His oldest son James held a Captain's
commission, was with Howe at the Battle of Brandywine, and was badly
wounded. Robert, the third son, was a Doctor
of Physic, and said to be eminent... Charles never married ... John
had a large family ... Samuel got a Captain's
commission, was at Gibraltar and died there.

She was born November 14, 1896 in Rattler Community, Mills County Tx, and died August 15, 1956 in Corpus Christi, Nueces County Tx.
Notes for JESSE YOUNG GLENN I:
Jesse Young Glenn I
Jesse Young Glenn was young when his parents
died and his sister Mozelle Glenn took over raising him and his younger
brother Lue James Glenn.
Jesse was very head strong and Mozelle couldn't control him.
He wasn't real quick to temper but when he did lose it. He did. He never allowed a twent-two on the ranch because it is said he almost killed his best friend one day with one. He took of a pair of pearl handled six shooters and threw them in the big tank between his ranch and Mozelle's and never allow any one to own one.
He also hated football. During his youth he use to play for the football team in Brady until one day he had a date and his brother William took over to play for him. William was killed that day from a broken neck and Mozelle blamed Jesse the rest of his life for the loss of William.
He was born and raised on the old Glenn ranch, where Mozelle, spinster and Lue James, bachelor, lived until the day they died. After his marriage to Mattye Ruby "Jackie" Harvey he had to sue Mozelle to recieve his share of the ranch. (Doucments in the possion of Jane Thorne Lemmons nee Glenn his youngest daughter).
One of the stories related about him was to Cecil Conner, his grandnephew. Cecil's father-in-law told of being at the Conner Wagon Yard in Brady one day when they had recieved a famous race horse in. Jesse came up in a one horse buggy pulled by a little sorrel mare. He looked the famous race horse over and bet them all his buggy mare could out run him.
Needless to say the bets were wagered and Jesse returned to the buggy, unharnessing his mare, he just happened to have a racing saddle in the back of the buggy. When all was said and done Jesse's mare won the race and they knew they had been snookered again by him.
When he was a young man before his marriage, they did not have trick or treat on Haloween as they do today. In those days it was all trick. He and his young friends rode to town and played many antics on the people. One of the pranks they pulled was tying a rope around the sheriff's outhouse and moving it back about three feet. They didn't realize they sheriff was waiting for them, inside. When the sheriff was finally fished out of the pit he order Jesse to leave town for a while.
Jesse rode horse back from Brady to Matagorda, Texas, what is today, Callahan, part of Corpus Chrisit, Tx. From there he found a job on a ranch near Kingsville, Texas on part of the present day King Ranch. The gentleman who owned the ranch died of a broken neck right after losing his ranch to the son-in-law of Mrs. King in a poker game. Jesse told of how he would meet the riders from the King ranch. They would have Bandalero's of bullets, two rifles and two six guns.
From there he went towards Del Rio. Just past Bracketville, he went to work on a ranch there for an old Bachelor. He worked for him for a couple of years until one day the old man let a new hand ride one of Jesse remuda. (In those days each ranch supplied the cowhand with horses, but each had his own string which they took care of. The unwritten law was no one could touch or ride someone else string. It just wasn't done. He quit. The old man tried to give him half of the ranch if he would only stay, but Jesse left and rode into Del Rio.
Being wintertime he couldn't get work so he bought a Hotel. He was a good cook and could make dooughnuts. Cowboys would ride for miles to get good food and exspecially doughnuts. He ran the hotel unti one spring day as he put it, his horse was fat and so was he, he locked the door and rode away. Back to Brady where he saw Mattye Ruby walking across the courthouse square. He said he was going to marry her and he did.
He taught his children hard work for an honest
dollar and that they were capable of being anything that they wanted to
be. When he was a younger man he use to wear out two or three pairs of
dancing shoes when he went to dances.
He learned to gamble from his father and to read a man as well as he
could read a book. He taught his children to count on a deck of cards.
All of them, even his daughters.
They use to hold big bar-b-q's up on the side
of the hill for all of the town. During the depression when his second
child caught the flu and died he borrowed money from the insurance company
to save D'Alva and Jesse.
He lost over half his ranch when they foreclosed after a fire wiped
out all his haystacks. Then he found out many of his so-called friends
were only fair weather friends, when he refused to go to the bank and borrow
money under his wife's name to buy back his land. He thought that was dishonest.
After that he was slow to give his trust. He still gave his help but he always had very few but real true friends. e was strange in many ways but he did the best that he could. I do not feel ashamed of him as a father.

Married on 18 January 1921, Brownwood, Brown County, Texas.

Notes for MATTYE RUBY HARVEY:
Mattye Ruby "Jackie" Harvey
Mattye Ruby "Jackie" Harvey was a small woman with very black hair and only five foot tall, white skin and blue eyes. When she was young her parents died leaving her to be raised by her sister Eula E. Harvey Beck. Eula having no children of her own took on the job when her mother lay on her death bed and told her to take care of her baby.
Mattye was the kindest, most softhearted person I ever knew. She never raised her voice in anger. And always found a good word to say for someone who hurt her. They had a bad day or they had problems. She was the opposite of her husband in many ways. Always a hug or kiss for any hurt of any kind. Her purse always smelled of Juicey Fruit gum.
She never drank, played cards or danced in
her life. She was brow beaten by many people all her life and could still
love all who were around her.
She had a very strict moral code and did her best to instill it in
her children. She loved to laugh and always wanted someone to go
with her to the movies to see Bud Abbott and Lou Costello, because she
didn't want to be embarassed by laughing alone.
One day at her daughter's house in Corpus Christi, her youngest two children Biddy and Jane had caught the ice cream truck. She heard a child crying outside and couldn't eat her ice cream because she thought that child was doing without.
She worked hard all her life and died owning only three dresses to her name. Everyone else needed something more so they got it. I remember during the fifty's when Eula was going to give her the money for an indoor toilet and instead Jesse asked for it to put in a crop. she looked at me and said she would die never having one. And she did. I will never be half the good Christian woman that she was even if I try hard. And I am very proud to have called her Mother.
